The 11th Regional GRIHA Summit 2021
The GRIHA Council's flagship event, the 11th Regional GRIHA Summit 2021, is co-located this year with India's premier Built Environment India Expo at the Bombay Exhibition Centre, Mumbai. With the theme "Sustainable Today, Resilient Tomorrow", this edition will be an ideal platform for the exchange of ideas and discussions regarding the latest sustainability developments and technological advancements in the construction sector. Resilience in the need of the hour and this year's theme allies Sustainable Developments and Resilient Performance and endeavours to connect the nations environmental and construction goals.
Theme Background: This year has introduced us to a new reality with the pandemic disrupting our social and economic ecosystems. The frequency of occurrence of natural disasters such as bushfires, droughts and floods among others is increasing, the instability fuelled further by human activities. Climate change is the key consequence of manmade disruptions and there is an urgency to act now to ensure the sustenance of our planet.
Today, buildings have evolved into a diverse array of typologies designed to meet the highly specific requirements of the people who live and work in them. Over time, with our growing technological skills, these buildings have also been increasingly designed and operated to place exorbitant demands on natural resources, such as land, water, and energy, to mention a few. Therefore, the incorporation of sustainable practices in building design and operation is no longer a choice but a necessity for a resilient future. Resilience is a necessary component for sustainable development. Building resilience and reducing vulnerabilities are core aspects of the SDGs and are highlighted across the framework which recognises that shocks and stresses produced by natural and man-made disasters can challenges and also reverse years of development gains. Of vital importance is the creation of robust systems, processes, infrastructure and urban development that has the ability to adapt to changing conditions, can withstand disasters and/or rapidly recover from disruption and assure preparedness of habitats. By developing the resilience capacity of the building/ development at the community or city level, we anticipate for, and reduce its vulnerability to dramatic change and extreme events. A resilient development responds creatively to environmental change, it adapts to maintain its function and performance and thereby forms a key pillar of achieving long term sustainability.
This edition of the 11th Regional GRIHA Summit, will not only continue to discuss and deliberate on furtherance of sustainable habitat development in India and the world; but will also account for the uncertainty this year has been. The three-day event in association with key stakeholders in the construction industry will be an exceptional opportunity strategize for a resilient and sustainable development whilst networking will government representatives, academia, policymakers, start-ups, industry leaders, and professionals from different disciplines such as architecture, engineering, and construction management.
