Secretary cum Treasurer
GRIHA Council

Dear Friends,
One more year has flown by and it is the time of the year to welcome you all to the 6th edition of the
GRIHA Summit 2015. With over 20 million sq.m GRIHA registered/certified built up space, more than 500
certified professionals to carry out evaluation as per GRIHA requirements, and adoption of GRIHA in several
states and municipalities of India, the importance and role of GRIHA in shaping the sustainable habitat agenda
of India is gaining strength. Facilitating convergence of national priorities that is crucial to the implementation
and mainstreaming of sustainable habitat, GRIHA plays an important role through assessment and rating of
buildings. It is a star based rating system for green buildings (five stars being the highest rating), which
stresses on passive solar techniques for optimising indoor visual and thermal comfort. Developed for
commercial and residential buildings, the rating system sets benchmarks for air conditioned and non-air
conditioned buildings in five climatic zones, namely hot-dry, warm-humid, composite, temperate, and cold.
GRIHA for Large Development, an impact-based rating system for large developments, is a unique rating
system that gives equal emphasis on environmental impact and quality. SVA GRIHA rating for projects with
built up area lesser than 2,500 sq.m, provides necessary design assistance to projects in order to meet the
green rating requirements.
GRIHA has had particular focus on performance of green buildings and has collected proven results that
demonstrate that green buildings perform as predicted or at times even better. The recently BEE 3 Star rated
Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh (the only hospital in Delhi to receive BEE star rating) is also TERI GRIHA 3 star
rated has an operating energy performance index of 157 kwh/m 2/year (HVAC and lighting energy), which is
significantly better than its initially calculated energy performance.
GRIHA has been adopted by the Government of India and various state governments to ensure design
and implementation of sustainable habitat. With measured impact on resource efficiency, GRIHA rating for
buildings and developments has also been linked to incentives in the form of additional Floor Area Ratio (FAR),
property tax rebates, and cheaper loans for developers across the country.
GRIHA has been embraced by organizations including, the National Building Construction Corporation Ltd.
(NBCC) and the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) where the building standards and specifications
have been revised to meet the minimum 3 Star GRIHA requirements.
We are proud to have partnered with the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) in an endeavour to
address the needs of existing building stock to perform better. The 6th edition of the GRIHA Summit promises
to bring together collective knowledge and wisdom of speakers and participants of national and international
repute. The knowledge shared during the Summit shall enable steer GRIHA to scale new heights.
