GRIHA Infrastructure Rating for Metro Stations

Introduction

Cities around the world are expanding rapidly, creating an urgent need for sustainable urban infrastructure. Metro systems have become vital to modern cities, providing efficient mass transit, reducing congestion, and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. As key interfaces between transit networks and commuters, metro stations play an important role in shaping both user experience and environmental performance. Integrating sustainability into their design and operation can significantly support broader climate and urban development goals. In line with the United Nations’ call for collective action, the GRIHA Council has developed a dedicated Metro Station Rating System to promote environmentally responsible, resource-efficient, and people-centric metro infrastructure for sustainable cities.

Intent

To promote the planning, design, construction, and operation of metro stations that are environmentally responsible, resource-efficient, and user-friendly, while enhancing commuter comfort and accessibility. The rating system aims to integrate sustainability principles into metro infrastructure by encouraging energy efficiency, water conservation, sustainable materials, waste management, and improved indoor environmental quality, thereby supporting low-carbon urban mobility and contributing to broader climate and sustainable development goals.
