Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment June 2023
Mr. Sanjay Seth, Vice President & CEO, GRIHA Council

Biodiversity, a magnificent tapestry of life, binds numerous diverse species and ecosystems. It is a life in itself that sustains us and generations to come. This year’s theme of International Biodiversity Day which is commemorated on 22nd May 2023 is ‘From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity’. Clearly, the theme serves as a clarion call to action urging us to protect and restore our ecosystems that support all life forms.

Recognizing that buildings have a profound impact on biodiversity, GRIHA Council advocates sustainable building practices that minimize ecological footprint and integrate nature into built landscapes thereby fostering sustainable habitats. Towards this, it gives me immense pleasure to share that GRIHA Council is honored to be associated with the New Parliament Building of the Central Vista Project which was inaugurated on 28th May 2023 by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India. The project is registered under GRIHA and has been developed incorporating green building practices.

Recently GRIHA Council participated in the World Circular Economy Forum 2023 held in Helsinki, Finland. It was a unique opportunity wherein the forum created momentum for building a nature positive future. The Forum focused on harnessing collective and accelerated actions, strengthening international partnerships, and building capacities for advancing circular solutions to tackle complex challenges like pollution, climate change, biodiversity loss, overexploitation of resources, health, energy etc.

Towards creating a cadre of informed and trained professionals, GRIHA Council successfully concluded the first of the 4-city series of training programme on GRIHA V.2019. The 3-day training programme was conducted in New Delhi from 24th-26th May 2023. It was a great opportunity for professionals to engage, share and learn about diverse aspects of sustainability in built environment. I encourage you all to actively participate in the upcoming 3-day training programme scheduled in Bengaluru from 12th-14th July 2023.

Also, a gentle reminder to all for marking your calendar for the much-awaited annual event- The 15th GRIHA Summit, scheduled for 23rd and 24th November 2023. Let’s recommit ourselves to preserve our natural heritage, conserve habitats, and embrace sustainable practices that harmoniously coexist with nature.

GRIHA Council at World Circular Economy Forum 2023

Mr. Sanjay Seth, Vice President & CEO, GRIHA Council and Senior Director, Sustainable Habitat Programme, TERI and Ms. Shabnam Bassi, Dy. CEO, GRIHA Council attended the World Circular Economy Forum in Helsinki, Finland. Finland and Sitra, the Finnish Innovation Fund, launched a global effort called WCED. The first Forum, WCEF 2017, highlighted global solutions and lessons learned while identifying critical components of a circular economy. WCEF aims at bringing experts from different industries (business leaders, policymakers etc.) and deliberate on the ‘game-changers’ in the circular economy.
The circular economy should be viewed as both a component of the larger picture of economic, societal, and cultural transformation required to achieve the EDG and SDGs as well as an instrument for achieving decoupling of economic growth from resource use and environmental impacts in practice (for strengthening resilience and strategic autonomy). It is known that the circular economy reduces resource use and impacts on the built environment.
